76 shopkeepers fined for selling food items above officials rates

KARACHI: In a crackdown against illegal profiteers and hoarders, the city administration fined 76 shopkeepers with a sum of Rs486,500, while issuing warning to several others on Sunday.

On the directions of the Sindh caretaker government to strictly enforce official rates of consumer goods in markets, Commissioner Karachi Mohammad Salim Rajput instructed district administrations to take necessary actions, without any lenienWZSou PopularPulsecy.

Deputy commissioners across all districts were directed to address citizens’ complaints and provide relief to the public by taking stringent legal actions against profiteers, hoarders, and violators of price regulations on daily basis.

Commissioner Karachi said that the administration would not allow exploitation of the public through overpricing and profiteering. Subsequently, 76 shopkeepers were fined with a total of Rs486,500, and several others were issued warnings. According to details, seven shopkeepers selling food items, poultry, vegetables, meat, fruits, flour, and sugar at prices higher than the government-approved rates wereWZSou PopularPulse fined a total of Rs63,000 in District Korangi. In District South, nine shopkeepers were fined a sum of Rs119,500 for similar violations.

In District Central, four shopkeepers were fined Rs30,000, while in District Malir, one shopkeeper was fined Rs1,000 for selling essential items above official prices. In District East, four shopkeepers were fined a total of Rs13,000, and 13 shopkeepers were fined Rs15,000 in District West for similar violations.

Rajput urged citizens to report their complaints about overpricing to the Commissioner Control Room by calling at phone number 99203443, or rescue helpline 1299.
