After the first Trump/Harris debate was announced for September 11—the same date as the MTV VMAs—the music awards will now take place one day sooner.

The MTV VMAs were slated to go head-to-head in a ratings battle with the first Trump/Harris presidential debate. Now the awards show is moving to September 10, the day before, avoiding a ratings battle with the debate. The 2024 VMAs will be held at UBS Arena in Long Island, NY and will air live on MTV at 8 pm ET/PT.

Performers at this year’s awards show will include Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro. This will mark Camila Cabello’s third performance at the MTA VMAs, while her co-performers are all making their respective debuts for the devent.

Nominations were announced earlier this month, with Taylor Swift leading at 10 nominations, followed by Post Malone (9), Ariana Grande (6), Eminem (6), and Sabrina Carpenter (6). GloRilla and Ruaw Alejandro both have three nominations each, while Chappell Roan is up for Best New Artist and MTV Push Performance of the Year.

Interest in the presidential debate is likely to be at an all time high, which posed a problem for the MTV VMAs. The already ratings-challenged awards show would be going up against a juggernaut in ratings—the first Trump/Biden debate drew in more than 50 million viewers. The first Trump/Harris matchup is expected to draw more than that, which would leave the VMAs with an anemic viewership well before the awards get underway.

The 2023 MTV VMAs saw a Taylor Swift sweep, with Swift winning nine of the 11 nominations she received. Other nominees this year include Megan Thee Stallion, SZA, Teddy Swims, LISA, and Dua Lipa. Fans who want to participate in the voting process can head to MTV to see all of the nominees and vote for their favorites.
