We once debated whether the reappropriation of the ‘N-word’ had gone too far, and maybe we’ve simply settled on strict cultural rules related to its usage. Yet that distinctly American baggage probably means little to the outsider – and now, it’s strangely rolled into the latest American cultural export.
Here’s the latest campaign video from French presidential candidate François Hollande, who appropriated the Jay-Z+Kanye track to accompany his tour of the poorer outskirts of Paris. Perhaps more importantly to the French listener, Kanye’s ‘cray’ maps to the pronunciation of the town ‘Creil’ in France.
